Tooth decay is a disease = carious disease. It is caused by bacteria that are found on the teeth and also in the mouth (eg. tongue). To some extent their existence is tolerated and is not harmful. But when their number increases (due to poor hygiene, a decrease in the amount of saliva), bacteria attack tooth enamel and lead to cavities. If untreated, it extends and attacks the nerve.
Basic treatment for tooth decay involves a decrease in number of bacteria that are found in the oral cavity. Restoration of tooth structure with different materials (“fillings“, crowns, implants, etc.) doesn’t solve the excess bacteria (plaque) problem.
